Sleep Huggers FAQ
Sleep Huggers FAQ
Q. Are Sleep HuggersT safe?
A. Yes, a well fitting Sleep HuggersT baby sleeping bag, when used correctly, is potentially the safest form of bedding for your baby. When using the proper size for your baby's age and weight, the fitted neck and armholes enable your baby to have complete freedom of movement without the risk of slipping in or out of their bag. An article in the European Journal of Pediatrics actually concluded that the use of baby sleeping bags act as a preventative factor in the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Dutch pediatricians recommend baby sleeping bags to all babies.
Sleep HuggersT are intended for crib use only and not designed for use outside of the bedroom. All safety standards set forth by Health Canada for crib bedding have been met.
Q. When can my baby start wearing a Sleep HuggersT baby sleeping bag?
A. We recommend that you wait until your baby is at least 10lbs before using the size small Sleep HuggersT. For most babies this is around the age of 6-8 weeks. For smaller or premature babies, or if you want to use the Sleep HuggersT from birth, we recommend that you start with an extra small bag, provided that your baby is at least 6lbs. Size small fits babies up to 6 months of age. Medium is designed for ages 6-18 months and very often lasts right until their second birthday. Size large is good for ages 18 - 36 months. This size generally fits toddlers up to 40lbs and is great at keeping toddlers in their cribs
Q. Why are Sleep HuggersT sleeveless?
A. Medical professionals recommend that baby sleeping bags be sleeveless to prevent overheating. The generous armholes aid in proper air circulation and keep baby comfortable. Besides, when babies sleep with normal blankets their arms are rarely kept under the covers. If you are concerned that your baby's arms may get cold we suggest dressing her in a long sleeved diaper shirt or pajama.
Q. Why is the side zipper Sleep HuggersT with the shoulder snaps only available in size small?
A. The side to bottom zipper and top snaps enables the side zip Sleep HuggersT to be opened up completely flat. This is ideal for young babies as it allows for easy access and makes diaper changing and putting baby down to sleep a breeze. Simply lay the sleeping bag open flat and place baby on top. Fold the top portion of the bag back over the baby and zip and snap closed.
Older babies, however, are prone to fiddling with the top snaps and could possibly undo them, enabling them to slip in or out of their sleeping bag. For this reason the front zip Sleep HuggersT, with the inverted zipper, is much better. The inverted, or upside down, zipper keeps the toggle out of the child's neck area and makes it much harder for them to unzip their bag.
Q. When can the quilted Sleep HuggersT be worn?
A. The quilted Sleep HuggersT works well at keeping your baby comfortable year round as long your baby's nursery is the proper temperature . Designed with a plush polyester fill, the quilted Sleep HuggersT will keep your baby warm and cozy even on those long cold winter nights. Do not overdress your baby. If they feel sweaty or too warm use lighter clothing.
On hot summer nights we suggest that you switch to a lighter weight unquilted Sleep HuggersT.
Q. How can I keep my baby from getting too hot or too cold while wearing their Sleep HuggersT?
A. The temperature of your baby's nursery and what your baby is wearing under their Sleep HuggersT is how you would ensure your baby remains comfortable. Health professionals recommend a baby's nursery be set at a room temperature of 16 - 21°C (64-68°F). At this temperature a baby can use the quilted Sleep HuggersT along with pajamas and/or a diaper shirt and remain comfortable. An inexpensive nursery thermometer, which can be purchased at local baby stores, will greatly help you gauge the temperature of the your baby's bedroom.
To check if your baby is comfortable place your hand on either the back of their neck or on their stomach. Do not gauge their body temperature by feeling their hands or feet as young babies often have under developed circulatory systems. If they feel either too hot or too cold adjust the layers of clothing or the baby's room temperature accordingly.
If your baby is too warm or sweaty cool them down by either removing layers of clothing or adjusting the temperature of the baby's room. In the warmer months when the temperature does not cool down until late at night we recommend that you keep your baby cool with a room fan. Then when the temperature cools down, your baby is already in their Sleep HuggersT, simply turn down the fan. Do not let your baby become too warm.
On the other hand if your baby wakes up from being too cold you we suggest you warm them back up and place extra clothing on them before placing them back in their crib. Try adding a long sleeved diaper shirt or sweater and/or socks. Do not add blankets.
Whether using a Sleep HuggersT baby sleeping bag or regular baby bedding it is always important to check on your baby to see that they're comfortable.
Q. What should my baby wear under their Sleep HuggersT baby sleeping bag?
A. We suggest that you dress your baby according to the season and the temperature of their bedroom. In milder weather a short or long sleeved diaper shirt or pajamas can be worn. In the cooler months try a short or long sleeved diaper shirt in addition to cozy pajamas. Socks or a sweater can also be added if your baby tends to get cold. You will quickly discover what it takes to keep your baby comfortable. It is imperative, however, that you do not let your baby become too warm.
Q. What other bedding is required with a Sleep HuggersT baby sleeping bag?
A. The great thing about Sleep HuggersT, baby sleeping bags, is that no other bedding is required except a well fitted crib sheet. This enables you to remove all loose and potentially dangerous objects from your baby's crib.
NEVER USE A BABY SLEEPING BAG TOGETHER WITH A DUVET OR COMFORTER.
Q. How many Sleep HuggersT should I purchase?
A. From our own experience we suggest at least two. It is always nice to have a spare on hand should you have one in the laundry or if your baby soils one in the middle of the night.
Q. Can I purchase a larger size for my baby to grow into?
A. Although we see the logic, we strongly advise against this. Sleep HuggersT are designed to fit the ages set forth in our sizing chart. If the baby sleeping bag does not fit properly you run the risk of your baby slipping in or out of their bag.
Always take care to not allow your baby's head to slip down and get covered by anything, whether a baby sleeping bag or any other type of bedding.
Q. Can I wash my Sleep Huggers baby sleeping bag?
A. Yes, Sleep Huggers can be washed in warm water (40°C) and tumble dried on a low heat setting. As with all 100% cotton products please allow for some shrinkage. To avoid shrinkage wash your Sleep HuggersT in cold water and hang to dry. We recommend that you wash your baby sleeping bag prior to the first use.
